Is there any singularity or is all One?  Part 1

This week-end we are going to think, to inquire about the notion: « Is there any singularity or is all One? », i.e. is there anything that would be unique, that would be particular, that would be separated, that would allow us to say: « I » or not? So, unlike the inquiries we have done so far, we are not going to consider the question « who am I? » or to try to know what I am; we will simply stay on this notion of: is there any singularity, is there anything separated that would allow us to start the search of an « I » ? Because if we are not able to find any singularity, if we are not able to find anything separated, at this point, we do not need to search for the « I ».

Conducting the inquiry during meditation allows us to stay, I would say, focused on the subject of meditation. The principle of meditation is always to bring the attention back to the object of the meditation (whether it is a candle, our breathing or an object of inquiry, no matter), meditation always invites to come back to the subject of meditation. If thoughts disturb the subject of meditation, let the thoughts pass and return to the subject of meditation.

So this morning, to start our week-end, the proposal is to observe the thoughts since in fact, there is a great philosopher who said: « I think, therefore I am » Descartes, not to name him, we can rely on his work that would express the fact that the presence of thoughts would attest to the presence of a thinker thus to a singularity. The proposal is to see, by ourselves, what we think about that.

What do we know about thoughts? First of all we can say that they are continually passing, as soon as we awaken, with higher or lower rate depending on various elements. We can also see that sometimes thoughts follow one another without consistency, one behind the other: we are focused on the subject of meditation and then : « ah I thirst, ah I am badly seated ». Therefore, they are clearly thoughts that come, that have nothing to do with the previous one, and we have long lived with a kind of conviction that the thoughts would come from the mind, that would emerge from the mind or in any case that a large number of thoughts would come from the mind, moreover leading us (when there are a lot of thoughts that arise) to tell ourselves: « Oh boy ! I have a powerful mind. » Thus there, for the time being, we are simply setting up the real subject of the meditation into which we are going to sink a little bit deeper now, because experimental evidence calls into question or completely threatens the fact that the thoughts would arise from the mind.

May be you know the so-called ‘hundredth monkey’ theory about this monkeys’ story, in Japan, that were studied for three decades and where the researchers gave them sweet potatoes to eat. The monkeys loved sweet potatoes but as the researchers threw them on sand, they were very dirty. They liked least the dirt that was on the potatoes. One day, a young monkey came up with the idea of washing the potato with the river water. His mother followed, almost all of the young followed, and the ancients resisted a little bit more by continuing to eat potatoes with dirt. This happened at an island level, over several years and, from one day to the next (but after several years), all monkeys began to wash their potatoes before eating them. And above all, what was most surprising is that the monkeys which lived on other islands or on the continent also began to wash the potatoes although they had never seen other monkeys doing that. This is very interesting with respect to the thoughts observation since we realize that, at a given time, a thought came to a monkey level, we don’t know how, this thought spread, and at a given time reached a certain number of monkeys and at one go, the whole monkeys had the information, and did that, without needed learning, without any lobbying to be done for the thought to be accepted, without any takeover of one monkey over the others to have them wash the potatoes, thus without all of what we know within the « how to propagate thoughts within humanity ».

At least, that comes to question us with respect to the notion of own thought. In any case, that goes to show us that there are thoughts not belonging to us and that « we » think, therefore that the « I » think, think thoughts which are sent by all his peers. Let’s take a more personal anecdote which I find very interesting with respect to this notion of thought: I had a friend researcher in bacteriology who spent his time researching and who tried to be the first to achieve discoveries. One day, we talked about thoughts that are permanently present, that are available for humanity (at least about this possibility) and he told me: « Of course, yes I know, we all know that among the researcher community! In fact, when we start doing research, we start writing the report for filing the patent even though we have not yet found anything because we know that at the time we are going to find, all the researchers working on the same subject for years will find it at virtually at the same time ». Therefore the important thing is not who will find it first or who will catch the thought first but, the important thing is the one who will fill the first. Thus the one who is going to do his homework before, writing the report before (for him to have only to sign the conclusions of his research), fills it much faster. Therefore, this is very, very interesting because here, it is showing us that a critical mass is not needed, i.e. if there are four to five researchers over the world intensively searching, they will find the information at the same time. So we may assume that as soon as one of them gets this information, then, the others would be able to receive it as if by telepathy, etc.… But we can also think, we can also wonder if the information, at one go, does not become available within the intelligence of humanity and that those who are connected to this thought, have access to it.

Therefore, what is important with regard to our inquiry is that we don’t necessarily intend to demonstrate that the thoughts are not generated by an individual but that in any case: can we say that one individual thinks? Or does the “individual” catch the thought, that is completely different? We are not looking for the precise functioning of thoughts, we are not going to get lost inside, we are just going to see what information we have, which is given, but also that we know from our own network of captured thoughts and what we feel about it.  Because then, what we have just seen (and we will take time to really observe it) in any case brings us to this conclusion : we are not sure whether « I think » exists but that « I » catch thoughts would be more accurate, if at any particular time we find a singularity which allows to say: “I catch”. In any case thoughts are captured…

And our concern is not to know how thoughts work but whether the fact that there are thoughts can prove to us there is a singularity. Let’s return to the subject of the inquiry. But, as of now, where we are in terms of thoughts (the observation of thoughts), it does not allow us to say for sure that there is a singularity, an individuality supported by the presence of thoughts…

In fact we all know, by our different experiences, that thoughts are available through various medias. Thus here, we have seen a critical mass, we could say a kind of temporality of information that would be available to the researchers but, more generally, it is known there are thoughts coming from egregores, like for example societal egregores, familial egregores, etc. … i.e. ways of functioning, ways of thinking which come from learning or from the energetic network where we are. There are still thoughts that seem to come from inspirations more carried by the Soul, the Spirit, which bring us to some kinds of impulses guided by Love. Thus our concern is not these kinds of thoughts that would not allow us to find the singularity, but let’s try to see if we could find a thought, only one, proving the singularity. If we find one, may be later we can continue to dig in…

Is there any thought that would come from an “I” who think? And there, in fact, perhaps one can say that a priori we have very personal thoughts as for instance: « I am hungry » that would prove, at that point, it is the “I”, the singularity who thinks. But there, we also realize that there is a bit of a strange functioning in the « I am hungry », e.g : while having breakfast at the same time in the morning, you are not hungry for lunch at the same time whether you live in Spain or in France. So at a certain time, the « I am hungry » is there, characterized by a conditioning linked to the lifestyle of the country where you are or the circle in which you live, the number of meals you are used to. May be it also happens that you have the feeling of « I am hungry » emerging in front of an advertising poster or a dish picture or an advertisement, no matter which one. There we realize that the « I am hungry » is not going to prove the existence of a singularity…

Then we can try to inquire on the different thoughts, I would say primarily trivial, like for instance « I am tired », which is a rather amazing thought when carefully observed. I don’t know if you have already experienced this, but the next time you think you « I am tired » or you feel tired, try to see where the tiredness is, try to see who is tired, which aspect is tired. I must say I often searched and I never found. And the most surprising thing is that very often, after a certain time of inquiry, when I am in front of « I am tired », not only do I still not find who is tired (if this is the physical body or the thoughts that are tired) as everything carries on the same but very often, in fact, by searching who is tired, the tiredness disappears. Thus at a certain time if you can find the « who is tired », I am more than interested as I am still searching…

Then at that point, we start to run out of thoughts that would come from a singularity and we have rather found that most of the thoughts which would come from a singularity, even all those we tried to study, are disseminated by various medias and that the mind catches them and takes ownership of them to make an « I think »…

Therefore, what is also interesting, by the way, that would bring us much further is that the « I think » itself is a thought, « I am », itself is a thought, « I exist » also...
And this time, this is really a thought shared by all humanity, i.e. this is a thought we all have, in a similar way but, there would be an « I » who thinks. It is interesting, I think, to delve into this. We are not going to do this for the time being…

Well, with regard to our concern, we can simply, where we are today (but we still have the week-end then it is fine, we still have a chance), we can simply say that, at this point, we can’t conclude that the presence of thoughts gives evidence of a singularity which would be ours and thus of an « I… ».

Well again, we are going to take our time to deepen at the thoughts level, each in silence, to see if one of us would have thoughts that would show us that the singularity could exist…

And then if it is not the case, we will keep on looking for the presence of the singularity at the emotions level, at the body level… at the observer level. I would say, anywhere provided we find the singularity, or not…

But to be able to identify it for sure in order to say « I » or to stop saying « I. » But saying is not the problem.

Thus I suggest to continue in silence and (according to all that was said here) to really challenge what was said, to really call into question, to doubt the truth, to seek where there are inconsistencies, where there would be a singularity because what interests us is really to find it, it is not to adhere to the belief that there is none. We really need to put all our strength in the research of singularity, whatever the response is. If we did not put all our strengths together, then this is just a game that leads us nowhere. We may emerge from this meditation, from this week-end, thinking: the singularity does not exist but deep within us, as the inquiry was not strongly conducted and that blurred areas were left, we will think : oh! It does not exist but there are still some blurred areas therefore it may still exist. Actually, a part of us will continue to adhere to it. If we conducted the inquiry strongly enough, thus, whatever the response is, we will be able to rely on it. Regardless of whether there is a singularity, we don’t have any preference and there is no right answer. The only right answer is the truth…

Our concern is the truth, it is not to have a response that suits us or which gives us the impression of progress…

Let’s remain silent.
